A Survey on Public Health Nursing Practice in Basic Nursing Education Program

Abstract
From June 1 to August 31, 1970, a survey was conducted covering 204 senior nursing students who completed health center practice, in two different levels of program, namely 5 collegiate and 4 diploma schools, to explore the present status of nursing students¢¥ field experience in public health nursing. But this survey covers only health center practice of nursing students in Seoul area.
The following are the main findings of the survey.
1) The period of health center practice ranges from 1 to 8 weeks.
2) 17.65% of students had not taken health center orientation during their field practice.
3) Mean experiences of the nursing activity of each student in one-week health center practice are as follows:
registration 25.39, clinic arrangemement 10.75, diagnostic procedure 31.80, nursing procedure 53.91, immunization 103.70, use of community resources 0.30, measurement 103.43, group health teaching 2.82, home visiting 7.64, survey and research 0.57, counselling 10.19, recording and reporting 59.92.
4) The range of their experiences in nursing activities, immunization is a wide one-from 10 to 2500, while use of community resources is a narrow one-from 0 to 4.
As a whole, the range of their experiences in nursing activities is not wide, except immunization.
5) Among their experiences in dignostic procedure in one-week health center practice, higher ranks were held by sputum, urine, X-ray test, showing 27.32%, 24.25%, 22.39%, respectively.
As shown above, diagnostic test for tuberculosis, like sputum and X-ray tests, ranks, highest.
6) Among their experiences in measurement in one-week health center practice, body weight check ranks highest showing 25.04%, and body height check comes next showing 23.93%. Lower ranks were held by pelvimetry, vital sign check and others, showing 2.49%, 2.36%, and 0.45%, respectively.
7) Among their experiences in immunization in one-week health center practice, cholera vaccination ranks highest showing 51.52%, while typhoid fever vaccination ranks lowest showing 1.63%.
8) Out of total 83,353, 5,344 cases of their experiences in one-week health center practice, were supervised by public health nursing instructor and public health nurse. In other words, only 6.41% of their total experiences were nuder supervision. Among those 0.05% were done by public health nursing instructor and 6.36%, by public health nurse.
Of their supervised experiences in nursing activities, use of community resources ranks highest showing 36.07%, measurement ranks lowest showing 1.42%.
As a whole nursing activities which needed multiple nursing diagnostic knowledge and skill were practiced under supervision, holding a higher rank.
9) The mean experiences of the student in each clinic in one-week health center practice were as follows:
well baby clinic 146.79, tuberculosis clinic 132.83, maternal wellfare clinic 92.57, family planning clinic 36.75.
Of their experiences in nursing activities in each clinic, their main experiences in well baby clinic were, measurement and in maternal welfare clinic, diagnostic procedure and measurement. Higher ranks of their experiences in tuberculosis clinic were held by diagnostic procedure and nursing procedure and in family planning clinic, by nursing procedure.
As shown above, clinic, by experiences of the students were largely influenced by the nature of the clinic activity.
10) Considering th fact that supervision of students public health nursing practice acturally needs much more active participation of instructors of public health nursing, the establishment of demonstration health center with a sufficient number of qualified instructors is urgently required.
